‘Now every girl does look like Barbie’: Ashley Graham gets new plus-sized doll — without a thigh gap
Plus-size model Ashley Graham officially has her own Barbie doll, and not only are its measurements accurate to life, but there’s not a thigh gap to be seen.
Presented to Graham at this year’s Glamour’s Women of the Year summit in Los Angeles on Monday, the doll is a part of her ongoing effort to promote body confidence and female empowerment.
“We need to work together to redefine the global image of beauty and continue to push for a more inclusive world,” Graham said in a statement. “I’m thrilled Barbie has not only evolved their product, but also has continued to honour women who are pushing boundaries. It’s an honour to be immortalized in plastic.”
“She had to have her thighs touch,” Graham said to The Hollywood Reporter. “No ands, ifs or buts about it. And I asked for cellulite but obviously plastic and cellulite don’t go hand in hand. … It was important that the Barbie resembled me as much as possible. The thighs touching was one way to show young girls that it’s okay for your thighs to touch, despite society saying that a ‘thigh gap’ is more beautiful.”
“Now every girl does look like Barbie,” she continued. “It’s not an unattainable thing. Now, they can say, ‘That’s my Barbie. I look like that one.’”
